In the name of religion

1096, Rhineland in present day Germany. Christian Crusader mobs attacked Jewish communities in cities such as Worms and Mainz, killing many people. Attackers claimed they were purifying Christendom before heading east, framing massacres as religious duty against those they labelled enemies of Christianity.

Fact

In Christianity, sin refers to actions and attitudes that separate people from God, and Christianity teaches that all humans are affected by sin.

Adapting religion

Across centuries, religion displayed remarkable adaptability. When political orders shifted, gods shifted with them. When empires collapsed, religions rebranded. When science revealed natural causes, religion retreated into metaphor and symbolism. Its core claims changed shape to survive every intellectual and cultural transformation, and this flexibility has often been mistaken for depth. In reality, it marks a system designed for survival rather than accuracy, for truth does not require adaptation to power, but fiction does.

Quote of the day

“Men would never be superstitious if they could govern all their circumstances by set rules, or if they were always favoured by fortune.” Baruch Spinoza.
