In the name of religion

1096, Rhineland in present day Germany. Christian Crusader mobs attacked Jewish communities in cities such as Worms and Mainz, killing many people. Attackers claimed they were purifying Christendom before heading east, framing massacres as religious duty against those they labelled enemies of Christianity.

Fact

In Buddhism, meditation is a core practice, with Buddhism teaching methods of concentration and mindfulness to develop clarity, calm, and insight into the nature of reality.

Special pleading

A religious apologist is an individual who engages in the systematic defense, justification, and explanation of religious doctrines, faith, and beliefs, often using logic, scripture, philosophy, and historical evidence. Apologetics relies heavily on special pleading. Rules that apply everywhere else are suspended when religion is involved. Claims that would be laughed out of court in any other context are treated as respectable when god is invoked. Lack of evidence becomes evidence of transcendence. Vagueness becomes profundity. Unfalsifiability becomes strength. The same mind that demands proof for ordinary decisions is trained to accept assertions without scrutiny when belief is threatened, creating a double standard that would be unthinkable anywhere outside religion.

Quote of the day

“I would rather have questions that cannot be answered than answers that cannot be questioned.” Richard Feynman.
