In medieval Europe, maps sometimes showed mythical creatures and monstrous races at the edges of the known world. These beings were not just fantasy decoration but were considered possible parts of God’s creation, placed beyond familiar lands.

In the name of religion

1991, Algeria civil conflict. Islamist groups targeted civilians, intellectuals, and foreigners during insurgency. Violence was justified as jihad to overthrow a secular state, enforce Islamic rule, and punish those seen as enemies of Islam.

In Taoism, knowledge gained through direct experience is emphasised, and Taoism often questions rigid intellectual systems.

Created for punishment

The concept of creation is riddled with inconsistency. God is said to create humans with desires, impulses, and limitations, then punish them for acting on those traits. This would be unacceptable in any human context. Designing a flawed system and blaming its components for failure is not wisdom but abdication of responsibility, and religion insists this is justice only because god is exempted from the standards applied to everything else.
