Weird and Religious

In parts of ancient China, early dynasties practised human sacrifice during royal burials. Servants, guards, or prisoners were killed to accompany a ruler into the afterlife. The dead king was expected to continue ruling in another realm and needed a court there as well.

In the name of religion

2014, Sinjar region in Iraq. Islamic State forces attacked Yazidi communities, killing men and enslaving women and children. The group justified actions through extremist doctrine labelling Yazidis as unbelievers, claiming religious permission for enslavement, forced conversion, and property seizure within a self declared caliphate.

Fact

In Islam, end times beliefs are present, and Islam includes teachings about signs before the final judgement, the appearance of major figures, and the eventual accountability of all people.

Religions of peace?

Historically, religion has been the reason for countless bloodbaths in the name of god. Believers often claim that religion also inspires peace, but this argument misses the point. Any ideology can promote kindness when it agrees. The true measure of belief is how it behaves when it meets conflict. Religion resolves that conflict by prioritising obedience. When god commands harm, pity is overruled, and only systems claiming divine authority can silence conscience so completely. Killing is recast as duty, mercy as weakness, and doubt as treason. Violence is no longer judged by human consequences but by loyalty to faith.

Quote of the day

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.” Steven Weinberg.
