Some strands of early Christianity practised baptism for the dead. Living believers were baptised on behalf of people who had already died, in case the deceased had not had the chance to receive the ritual while alive.

In the name of religion

2021, Ethiopia, Tigray region. Although mainly ethnic and political, attacks on religious sites and identity occurred. Some actors used Orthodox Christian or Muslim identity rhetoric to mobilise supporters, framing struggle as defence of faith community amid war.

In Confucianism, righteousness, known as yi, guides action, and Confucianism teaches doing what is morally appropriate rather than what is merely profitable.

Understanding - Not indulgence

Belief is understandable, indoctrination is powerful, social pressure is real and the human brain is imperfect. All of this needs to be examined in detail. But understanding is not the same as indulgence. At some point, explanations must give way to conclusions. Religion is not a divine truth humanity failed to live up to. It is a human story humanity forgot it invented.

History tells us that wherever fools gathered, there was always a religious crook to take advantage of them. The best way to stop the crooks is not to be a fool.
