Weird and Religious

Islamic tradition includes the idea that certain animals will testify on the Day of Judgement. A person’s own skin, hands, and feet are also described as speaking and giving evidence about what the person did in life, as though the body itself records moral actions.

In the name of religion

2010, Jos, Nigeria. Christian and Muslim communities engaged in cycles of massacre and reprisal. Each side justified violence as protecting their faith group, defending land tied to religious identity, and avenging earlier attacks.

Fact

Hinduism teaches that reality is guided by dharma, a principle of moral order and personal duty that shapes how individuals are expected to live in a way that supports balance in family life, society, nature, and the wider universe.

Flawed apologists

A religious apologist is an individual who engages in the systematic defense, justification, and explanation of religious doctrines, faith, and beliefs, often using logic, scripture, philosophy, and historical evidence. One of the clearest signs of apologetics at work is its dependence on human authority. Sacred texts are said to be perfect, yet ordinary believers are warned not to read them without guidance. Clerics, scholars, and institutions position themselves as necessary interpreters, which raises an obvious question about why a perfect message from an all-knowing god would require endless clarification by flawed humans. A communication that needs constant repair is not perfect but defective, and the more elaborate the explanation, the clearer that defect becomes.

Quote of the day

“Devout believers are safeguarded in a world of their own, a protected microclimate of belief in which they can flourish, safe from the competing harshness of reality.” Daniel Dennett.

Ask the right question
