Weird and Religious

Some Native American traditions include stories of trickster gods who lie, cheat, and behave foolishly. These figures were not purely evil but showed that the sacred world included chaos, humour, and moral lessons delivered through absurd behaviour.

In the name of religion

1099, Jerusalem in the Levant. Crusader armies captured the city during the First Crusade and killed many Muslim and Jewish inhabitants while seizing holy sites. Leaders described the assault as a sacred duty to liberate Christ’s tomb, forgive sins, and serve God through sanctioned holy war.

Fact

In Christianity, charity is encouraged, and Christianity teaches giving to those in need as a practical expression of love and faith.

Meaning beyond religion

Recognising that humanity is not cosmically special unsettles many people, yet it also offers liberation. Once the assumption of centrality falls away, the need for divine stories that elevate humanity above everything else disappears with it. Species have risen and fallen before, and extinction is not punishment but process. It is the natural result of change in a universe indifferent to survival. Humanity is already advancing its own vulnerability through conflict, greed, and shortsightedness, which makes the abandonment of false purpose more urgent than ever. Meaning does not vanish when gods do. It relocates into the human sphere, where purpose becomes something created through action rather than granted by authority. Meaning arises from reducing suffering, expanding understanding, protecting the future, and cooperating beyond tribe and belief. None of these goals require cosmic endorsement. They require awareness, compassion, and responsibility.

“I would rather have questions that cannot be answered than answers that cannot be questioned.” Richard Feynman.

Ask the right question

If spiritual experiences reveal truth, why can drugs, lack of sleep or brain stimulation produce similar experiences?

Religious Crooks

David Berg founded the Children of God movement, later called The Family International, promoting radical religious teachings while encouraging followers to surrender money and, according to former members, using sexuality and spiritual pressure as tools of control. For more information, google the name. If a real God existed, would he allow crooks to act on his behalf?
