Weird and Religious

Among the Dinka people of South Sudan, cattle are deeply woven into spiritual life. Cows are given personal names, songs are sung to them, and their colours and horn shapes can have ritual meaning. A person’s identity and spiritual world can revolve around their cattle as much as their family.

2003, Saudi Arabia. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula carried out bombings against residential compounds. The group justified attacks as jihad against Western presence and un-Islamic rulers, promising religious reward for striking perceived enemies of Islam.

Removing indulgence

Emotional resistance to evolution often appears as intellectual critique, but the discomfort is existential. If life was not designed for us, then the universe is not about us. If we were not planned, then responsibility rests with us alone. That is the real threat evolution poses to religion. It removes cosmic indulgence and replaces it with autonomy.
