Weird and Religious

Among the ancient Hebrews, the Ark of the Covenant was believed to be so dangerous that touching it improperly could cause instant death. Stories describe people struck down simply for steadying it when it seemed about to fall, showing how sacred objects were treated as physically hazardous.

In the name of religion

2000, Maluku and Sulawesi in Indonesia. Continued clashes between Christian and Muslim militias involved bombings, village burnings, and killings. Each side justified attacks as defence of churches or mosques, protecting believers, and resisting religious encroachment.

Fact

In Jainism, fasting is practised, and Jainism links voluntary fasting to discipline and spiritual progress.

Contradictions in religion

Religion presents itself as internally consistent and logically complete, yet it survives only by asking believers to hold mutually incompatible ideas at the same time. These contradictions are not minor theological quirks; they sit at the core of religious belief and cannot be resolved without abandoning either reason or honesty. The most common response is not to solve them but to normalise them, teaching believers that contradiction is mystery and confusion is depth. One of the clearest examples is the claim that god is all powerful and that everything happens according to god’s will while simultaneously insisting that god is not responsible for evil. If god controls all events, then god controls evil, and if god does not control evil, then god is not all powerful. There is no third option that preserves both claims.

Quote of the day

“Men would never be superstitious if they could govern all their circumstances by set rules, or if they were always favoured by fortune.” Baruch Spinoza.

Ask the right question

If sacred texts are clear guidance, why do they require historical context to avoid harmful interpretations?

Religious Crooks

Eddie Long was a megachurch pastor accused in civil suits of coercing young men into sexual relationships while using his spiritual authority, with the cases settled out of court and ongoing debate about financial and power dynamics in his ministry. For more information, google the name. If a real God existed, would he allow crooks to act on his behalf?
