Weird and Religious

There are reports in Islamic tradition that the Prophet’s night journey involved travelling from Mecca to Jerusalem and then ascending through multiple heavens in a single night, meeting earlier prophets along the way and seeing paradise and hell. The journey is presented as both physical and supernatural.

In the name of religion

1995, Tokyo in Japan. Members of Aum Shinrikyo released sarin gas in the subway, killing and injuring commuters. The cult blended apocalyptic beliefs and claimed spiritual necessity. Leaders justified violence as purifying the world, protecting followers, and fulfilling a divine end times mission.

Fact

In Confucianism, righteousness, known as yi, guides action, and Confucianism teaches doing what is morally appropriate rather than what is merely profitable.

Angry Gods

Anger plays a central role in divine narratives because gods are often portrayed as easily offended and quick to rage. Natural disasters become expressions of displeasure, disease becomes punishment, and death becomes judgement. These stories reflect the human tendency to moralise misfortune, since when something bad happens, the mind searches for blame, and gods provide a convenient target. They turn chaos into consequence and randomness into intention, offering emotional satisfaction in place of understanding. Nature, however, does not punish or forgive; it simply behaves according to causes that have nothing to do with morality.

Quote of the day

“Religion is the dream of the human mind.” Ludwig Feuerbach.

Religious Crooks

Edir Macedo founded the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Brazil, building a vast religious and media empire, and has faced accusations and legal cases over financial practices, with critics describing aggressive fundraising tied to promises of divine reward. For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. History tells us that wherever fools gathered, there was always a religious crook to take advantage of them. The best way to stop the crooks is not to be a fool.
