In parts of West Africa, belief in witchcraft can focus on the idea that spiritual power is inherited within families and can be used unconsciously to harm others. Misfortune such as illness or business failure may be explained through these unseen forces rather than chance.

In the name of religion

1998, Maluku Islands in Indonesia. Christian and Muslim militias clashed in communal warfare, burning villages and killing civilians. Both sides justified violence as defence of their Christian or Muslim faith communities, protection of churches or mosques, and resistance to domination.

Protecting belief

A religious apologist is an individual who engages in the systematic defense, justification, and explanation of religious doctrines, faith, and beliefs. Defenders of religion often say they are preserving truth, yet in reality they are preserving belief, and the distinction matters because truth does not fear scrutiny while belief does. The more elaborate the defence, the weaker the foundation, and when a claim requires endless protection from inquiry, the problem is never the inquiry itself.
