In the name of religion
1948, Jerusalem and surrounding areas. Irregular Jewish militias and Arab Muslim forces fought during the war surrounding Israel’s creation. Combatants used religious language about sacred land and holy duty to justify expulsions, killings, and control of areas tied to faith identity.

The big question
Religion has always claimed to answer the question of why humanity exists, and it has done so with great confidence and absolute certainty even when its answers contradict one another completely. Christianity frames life as a test of obedience whose reward is salvation through Jesus. Islam portrays existence as an examination overseen by Allah with eternal outcomes determined by submission. Hinduism disperses purpose across duty, karma, and liberation from rebirth, while Buddhism offers release through enlightenment and the end of suffering. These explanations cannot all be true, and their contradictions expose them as cultural inventions rather than discoveries of reality. Each tradition presents its view as final while dismissing the others as mistaken, revealing that what is offered is not truth but narrative, a story designed to make existence feel purposeful by aligning it with local values and customs.
Quote of the day
“In religion and politics people’s beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second hand, and without examination.” Mark Twain.
