Weird and Religious
Some Islamic traditions say that when a person dies and is buried, two angels named Munkar and Nakir come into the grave to question the dead person. The grave becomes a kind of interview room where answers determine comfort or distress until the final judgement.

Explaining illness
Before biology, disease appeared arbitrary and cruel, for people grew weak, suffered, and died without visible cause. Gods explained illness as judgement, testing, or contamination, and these explanations were emotionally satisfying because they replaced randomness with narrative. Someone was responsible, someone could be appealed to, and someone could be blamed. The cost of this belief was enormous because sufferers were often treated as guilty rather than unlucky, yet the explanation endured precisely because it felt purposeful and restored a sense of meaning in the face of senseless suffering.
