Weird and Religious

The Kaaba in Mecca, now the central shrine of Islam, contained many tribal idols before Islam. Pilgrimage to the site already existed, and different groups visited to honour their own gods. Islam kept the pilgrimage but removed the idols and redefined the focus to one God.

In the name of religion

2011, Jos region in Nigeria. Clashes between Christian and Muslim communities led to massacres and village destruction. Both sides justified violence as protecting their faith groups, defending land seen as religiously tied, and avenging earlier killings.

Common flaws

The Qur’an, the Bible, and the Torah are often treated as fundamentally different, but their flaws are remarkably similar. Each reflects the social structure of its time. Each encodes power relations. Each demands submission. Each resists scrutiny. Each claims perfection while requiring armies of interpreters to explain away its failures. If these books were presented today without their sacred status, they would be rejected as the products of their era, not revelations from beyond it.
