Weird and Religious

There have also been religions built around very recent figures. In parts of Melanesia in the twentieth century, “cargo cults” formed where people believed Western goods came from ancestral spirits. They built imitation airstrips and control towers from wood, performing rituals in the hope that planes full of supplies would return.

In the name of religion

1992 to 1995, Bosnia. Serb Orthodox, Croat Catholic, and Bosniak Muslim forces committed ethnic cleansing, sieges, and massacres. Religious identity markers were used to justify expulsion and killing, portraying war as defence of faith communities and sacred national heritage.

Fact

In Judaism, rabbinic tradition plays an important role, and Judaism uses generations of legal discussion to interpret how commandments apply in practical life.

Confirming belief

Reason operates by testing ideas against reality, demanding coherence, consistency, and evidence. It accepts uncertainty and revises conclusions when new information appears. Faith does the reverse. It begins with a conclusion and defends it regardless of contradiction. Discrepancies are reinterpreted, absence of evidence becomes a test, and failed predictions become mysteries. Every outcome is made to confirm belief because belief has been placed beyond evaluation. This is not strength but insulation.

Quote of the day

“Men would never be superstitious if they could govern all their circumstances by set rules, or if they were always favoured by fortune.” Baruch Spinoza.
