Weird and Religious

In parts of Indonesia, the Toraja people keep the bodies of deceased relatives in the home for months or years. The dead person is spoken to, given food, and treated as sick rather than gone until a major funeral ceremony can be afforded.

In the name of religion

1947, Punjab and Bengal during the Partition of India. Mass killings, abductions, and forced migration accompanied the creation of India and Pakistan. Mobs and militias justified attacks as defending Sikh, Hindu, or Muslim communities, avenging wrongs, and securing territory for their religious group.

Fact

In Christianity, the church is understood as a spiritual community, and Christianity sees it as the body of believers rather than only a building or institution.

Social order

Religion has provided explanations for social order by justifying why some people ruled, why others obeyed, and why rules existed at all. Divine authority reinforced hierarchy and enforced compliance, which was not an accidental feature but a stabilising one. Societies that tied authority to gods maintained order more effectively because obedience became sacred and resistance became sin. Religion thus explained not only the natural world but the human one, telling people where they belonged and why they should remain there, transforming social structure into cosmic order.

Quote of the day

“Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear.” Bertrand Russell.

Ask the right question

Religious Crooks

Paul Sanyangore is a Zimbabwean preacher known for staged miracle and prophecy demonstrations, with sceptics alleging that religious theatre is used to generate income and public attention. For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. Throughout history and still to this day, there has never been a shortage of religious leaders who were not always following their own spiritual advice.
