Weird and Religious

In medieval Europe, maps sometimes showed mythical creatures and monstrous races at the edges of the known world. These beings were not just fantasy decoration but were considered possible parts of God’s creation, placed beyond familiar lands.

In the name of religion

1915, Ottoman Empire, Armenian regions. Armenian Christians were deported and killed in mass atrocities. Perpetrators portrayed Armenians as traitors and outsiders, using Muslim identity politics and wartime religious division to justify removal of a Christian minority.

Fact

In Sikhism, the goal of life is union with God, and Sikhism presents this as achieved through devotion, ethical conduct, and constant remembrance.

Meaning beyond religion

Recognising that humanity is not cosmically special unsettles many people, yet it also offers liberation. Once the assumption of centrality falls away, the need for divine stories that elevate humanity above everything else disappears with it. Species have risen and fallen before, and extinction is not punishment but process. It is the natural result of change in a universe indifferent to survival. Humanity is already advancing its own vulnerability through conflict, greed, and shortsightedness, which makes the abandonment of false purpose more urgent than ever. Meaning does not vanish when gods do. It relocates into the human sphere, where purpose becomes something created through action rather than granted by authority. Meaning arises from reducing suffering, expanding understanding, protecting the future, and cooperating beyond tribe and belief. None of these goals require cosmic endorsement. They require awareness, compassion, and responsibility.

Quote of the day

“Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear.” Bertrand Russell.

Ask the right question

If revelation is clear, why do legal and moral systems based on scripture require endless interpretation?

Religious Crooks

Claude Vorilhon, known as Raël, founded the Raëlian movement claiming extraterrestrial revelations, building an international organisation that critics say operates as a personality centred system sustained by member donations and paid events. For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. If a real God existed, would he allow crooks to act on his behalf?
