Weird and Religious

In medieval Europe, people believed that church bells could drive away storms and demons. Bells were blessed with holy water and given names, and ringing them during bad weather was meant to protect crops and villages.

In the name of religion

1568 to 1648, parts of the Netherlands and German lands. Conflicts within the Eighty Years War and Thirty Years War saw massacres and destruction tied to Catholic and Protestant divisions. Violence was justified as defending correct doctrine, protecting believers, and ruling territories according to God’s will.

In Sikhism, worship takes place in a gurdwara, and Sikhism gathers people for prayer, singing of hymns, and listening to scripture.

Divine rule

Understanding religion as an instrument of power does not require cynicism or conspiracy but simple observation. Wherever religion and power converge, religion bends toward power. It always has and always will. Gods do not rule societies. Humans do, and religion provided them with the most persuasive language ever devised to make that rule appear unquestionable.

History tells us that wherever fools gathered, there was always a religious crook to take advantage of them. The best way to stop the crooks is not to be a fool.
