In ancient Rome, there was a festival called Saturnalia where normal social order was briefly reversed. Slaves could mock their masters, gambling was allowed, and public behaviour loosened. Religion created a scheduled period where rules were suspended under divine approval.

Male domination
Religion did not create male dominance but perfected its justification. Long before gods were written into books, societies were built around physical strength, inheritance, and control of reproduction. Religion entered this order and sanctified it so that what men already enforced socially became divinely mandated. The result was not guidance from above but confirmation from on high, for god, it turned out, agreed entirely with the interests of men.
