Islamic texts describe a bridge called As Sirat that all people must cross after judgement. It is said to be thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword, suspended over hell. Some cross quickly, others crawl, and some fall. The afterlife includes what sounds like a cosmic obstacle course.

2022, Ondo State in Nigeria. Islamist Muslim gunmen attacked a Christian church during mass, killing worshippers. Attackers invoked extremist Islamist narratives, justifying violence as jihad and punishment of Christians within a broader religious insurgency.

Religious violence
Genocide flourishes in systems that divide humanity into chosen and condemned. When god selects one people as special, others are easily dehumanised. Extermination becomes cleansing and displacement becomes destiny. The language may shift with time, but the underlying mechanism remains constant. The First Crusade, the Albigensian Crusade, sectarian phases of the Thirty Years War, the 1860 Mount Lebanon and Damascus conflict, the Islamic State campaign in Iraq and Syria after 2014, and mass killing campaigns associated with Taliban rule in Afghanistan are all historical episodes in which religion was used as a central justification for genocidal violence.

Religious Crooks
Marcial Maciel was the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, a Catholic religious order, and was later found by Vatican investigations to have sexually abused minors and seminarians over many years while using his religious status to avoid scrutiny.
