Weird and Religious

In medieval Europe, animal trials were a real legal practice. Pigs, rats and even insects were sometimes put on trial for crimes such as destroying crops or killing a child. They were assigned lawyers, witnesses were heard, and punishments could include execution or banishment, all under a religious worldview in which moral order applied to all creation.

In the name of religion

2013, Nairobi in Kenya. Islamist Muslim group Al Shabaab attacked the Westgate shopping centre, killing shoppers. The group said the assault was retaliation for Kenyan military action in Somalia and framed it as jihad against non Muslims and their supporters.

Fact

In Zoroastrianism, belief centres on one supreme deity called Ahura Mazda, and Zoroastrianism teaches that this being represents truth, light, and wisdom.

Giving Life Meaning

The fear of meaninglessness plays a role in Religion. A universe without intention feels cold, and a life without cosmic purpose feels small. Gods solve this by placing humanity at the centre of everything. The universe becomes a stage built for human drama. Suffering becomes meaningful, obedience becomes important, and each person becomes known and watched. This is deeply flattering to the human ego but also profoundly comforting. Being insignificant is far more frightening than being judged.

Quote of the day

“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature.” Karl Marx.
