The Inca of South America performed a ritual known today as capacocha, in which children considered physically perfect were taken to high mountains and left to die from exposure or were buried alive. This was done during important events such as the death of an emperor or natural disasters, as an offering to mountain spirits.

In the name of religion

1649, Drogheda in Ireland. Oliver Cromwell’s troops stormed the town and killed many defenders and civilians after surrender disputes. Supporters portrayed the killings as divine judgement against Catholic enemies and rebellion, using biblical language to defend harsh punishment and intimidation.

The comfort of certainty

Religion offers a moral framework that simplifies choices. Clear rules about right and wrong remove the burden of moral reasoning and replace it with obedience. For many, this produces a sense of clarity and integrity. Life feels easier when every decision has a prescribed answer. The price is the loss of independent moral growth, but the psychological reward can still be significant. In highly prescriptive systems, moral guidance extends into the smallest details of life, relieving people of responsibility while granting them the comfort of certainty.
