Weird and Religious
The medieval Catholic practice of selling indulgences promised to reduce time in purgatory in exchange for money or acts. This commercial approach to the afterlife later helped spark the Protestant Reformation.

In the name of religion
1209, Béziers in southern France. Forces in the Albigensian Crusade attacked the city and killed large numbers of residents while targeting Cathar believers. The campaign was justified as eliminating heresy, defending Catholic truth, and restoring religious unity under papal authority through violent purification.
Fact
In Hinduism, puja is a common form of worship, involving offerings such as food, flowers, light, and incense, along with gestures and prayers meant to honour and connect with a deity.
Killing in God's name
The Crusades were not political manoeuvres disguised in spiritual language. They were openly holy campaigns, sanctioned by god, rewarded with promises of salvation, and promoted as sacred duty. Participants were assured that killing in god’s name was righteous and dying while doing so was glorious. The Inquisitions followed the same logic. Heresy was defined as disease, and torture or execution became treatment. The aim was never justice but purification, with the soul valued above the body, making cruelty appear virtuous.
Quote of the day
“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.” Steven Weinberg.
