Weird and Religious

In Japan, there are Buddhist temples that hold memorial services for broken objects such as needles and even dolls. The idea is that objects have a kind of spiritual presence, and throwing them away without respect could be improper. Old dolls are sometimes burned in rituals rather than discarded as rubbish.

In the name of religion

1983, Beirut, Lebanon. A suicide bomber linked to Islamist groups attacked US Marine barracks, killing many soldiers. The act was justified as jihad against foreign forces in Muslim lands, framed as religiously sanctioned resistance and martyrdom.

Fact

In Hinduism, the sound Om is regarded as a sacred syllable that represents the fundamental vibration of the universe, and it is commonly used in chanting and meditation as a way to focus the mind and connect with ultimate reality.

Religion and virginity

Virginity is a religious fixation. Female worth is tied to sexual purity in ways that have no equivalent for men. A woman’s past becomes moral currency, while a man’s past is largely irrelevant. Honour becomes something men possess and women can destroy, producing violence, abandonment, and exclusion with grim regularity. These consequences are not distortions of religious intent but logical outcomes of doctrines that treat women as vessels of honour rather than autonomous human beings.

Quote of the day

“So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence.” Bertrand Russell.

Ask the right question

If the universe shows no clear sign of purpose in its vast empty regions, why assume human life is its central goal?

Religious Crooks

ESwami Premananda is a Hindu guru in India who ran an ashram and was convicted of rape and murder, with courts finding that spiritual status was used to control and abuse followers. For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. Today we took a look at yet another religious crook but there are hundreds of thousands of them. You could spend a lifetime researching the topic.
