In the name of religion

1536 to 1541, Cuzco region of Peru. Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire involved battles, executions, and repression of resistance alongside forced Christianisation. Conquest was framed as spreading the true faith, ending idolatry, and exercising divine authority granted to Christian rulers and missionaries.

Fact

In Buddhism, monasteries function as centres of learning and practice, and Buddhism relies on these communities to preserve teachings and provide guidance.

Sacred flaws

Contradictions are everywhere. Events are retold differently. Laws change without explanation. God’s character shifts from merciful to murderous depending on context. Instructions conflict. Promises fail. Prophecies are retrofitted. Apologists call this depth or mystery. In any other book, it would be called poor editing. When a text claims perfection, inconsistency is not a minor flaw. It is fatal.

Quote of the day

“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” Carl Sagan.
