In the name of religion

1975, Lebanon civil war phase. Christian and Muslim militias attacked civilian neighbourhoods in sectarian cleansing campaigns. Leaders justified operations as protecting their religious communities, defending holy identity, and preventing domination by rival faith based factions.

Fact

In Christianity, love of neighbour is a major command, and Christianity teaches caring for others, including enemies, as a reflection of God’s love.

Divine rule

Understanding religion as an instrument of power does not require cynicism or conspiracy but simple observation. Wherever religion and power converge, religion bends toward power. It always has and always will. Gods do not rule societies. Humans do, and religion provided them with the most persuasive language ever devised to make that rule appear unquestionable.
