During the European witch trials, animals called “familiars” were believed to be demons in disguise helping witches. A pet cat, toad, or even a fly could be presented in court as evidence of a pact with the Devil.

In the name of religion

1649, Drogheda in Ireland. Oliver Cromwell’s troops stormed the town and killed many defenders and civilians after surrender disputes. Supporters portrayed the killings as divine judgement against Catholic enemies and rebellion, using biblical language to defend harsh punishment and intimidation.

In Taoism, harmony with the Tao is the ideal, and Taoism encourages living in a way that flows naturally with the patterns of nature rather than forcing outcomes.

Serving power

Religion presents itself as a moral counterweight to power, a voice that speaks truth to authority and restrains human cruelty, yet history records a very different story. Religion did not emerge to challenge rulers but to serve them. From the earliest chiefdoms to modern states, divine authority has proved the most reliable means of justifying rule, enforcing obedience, and silencing resistance. Power did not borrow religion reluctantly but embraced it because it worked.

For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. If a real God existed, would he allow crooks to act on his behalf?
