Weird and Religious

In the name of religion

2021, Ethiopia, Tigray region. Although mainly ethnic and political, attacks on religious sites and identity occurred. Some actors used Orthodox Christian or Muslim identity rhetoric to mobilise supporters, framing struggle as defence of faith community amid war.

Fact

In Islam, angels are part of belief, and Islam teaches that they carry out God’s commands and record human actions.

Metaphor to the rescue

Defenders of impossible stories such as Noah's Ark often argue that these stories were never meant to be taken literally, but this is historically false. For centuries, disbelief was punished and doubt was condemned. These narratives were taught as fact because they worked. They inspired awe, discouraged questioning, and separated believers from sceptics. Only later, when the audience became harder to impress and easier to educate, did metaphor appear as a rescue strategy.

Quote of the day

“The easy confidence with which I know another man’s religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also.” Mark Twain.

Religious Crooks

Gerald Gardner helped found modern Wicca and positioned himself as a key authority on ancient witchcraft traditions, while critics have argued he blended invention, selective history, and personal leadership in ways that brought him status, influence, and financial benefit through books and initiations. For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. History tells us that wherever fools gathered, there was always a religious crook to take advantage of them. The best way to stop the crooks is not to be a fool.
