Weird and Religious
Some Buddhist traditions describe entire realms of existence where beings suffer extreme conditions for vast periods because of past actions. These hell realms are not eternal but can last longer than the entire span of human civilisation.

In the name of religion
1478 onward, Spain. The Spanish Inquisition targeted Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity but were suspected of false belief. Arrests, torture, and executions were justified as defending Catholic orthodoxy, purifying society, and saving souls from heresy and divine punishment.
Fact
In Shinto, death is often handled differently, and Shinto sometimes leaves funerary practice to other traditions while focusing on life and vitality.
Sacred tribalism
Tribalism saturates every page of sacred texts. Gods favour one group over others. Outsiders are inferior, dangerous, or disposable. The moral circle rarely extends beyond the in-group. This is exactly what one would expect from texts written to unify tribes and enforce loyalty. It is not what one would expect from a universal creator. The idea that a god responsible for billions of galaxies would focus obsessively on the dietary rules, sexual habits, and territorial disputes of a small population is not profound, it is absurd.
