In parts of ancient China, early dynasties practised human sacrifice during royal burials. Servants, guards, or prisoners were killed to accompany a ruler into the afterlife. The dead king was expected to continue ruling in another realm and needed a court there as well.

1209, Béziers in southern France. Forces in the Albigensian Crusade attacked the city and killed large numbers of residents while targeting Cathar believers. The campaign was justified as eliminating heresy, defending Catholic truth, and restoring religious unity under papal authority through violent purification.

Before Science
Before science existed, explanation still mattered because humans did not stop asking questions simply because they lacked the tools to answer them. The sky rumbled, the ground shook, people fell ill, children died, dreams intruded into waking life, and bodies failed without warning, yet something was happening, and doing nothing with that uncertainty was never an option. In the absence of evidence, religion stepped in, not because it was correct but because it was available.
