In the name of religion

2012, Timbuktu region of Mali. Islamist Muslim armed groups destroyed Sufi shrines and imposed harsh rule. They justified actions as removing un-Islamic practices, enforcing strict Islamic law, and purifying society according to their interpretation of Islam.

In Hinduism, the Vedas are highly respected sacred texts, containing hymns, rituals, and early reflections that form a foundation for religious life and thought.

Wrong way around

When believers claim that humans are made in the image of God, they reverse the actual relationship. Gods are made in the image of humans, and the projection could not be clearer. Human virtues are magnified into divine perfection, and human vices are excused as righteous judgement. Where humans are limited, gods are imagined as infinite extensions of the same impulses. Greater anger, greater love, greater punishment, and greater reward emerge from the same emotional material, expanded in scale but unchanged in substance
