Weird and Religious

In some ancient Near Eastern traditions, there are references to child sacrifice associated with the god Molech. Texts describe children being passed through fire as part of worship. Later religious writers strongly condemned the practice, but its existence shows how sacrifice could be directed at the most vulnerable.

In the name of religion

2014, Sinjar region in Iraq. Islamic State forces attacked Yazidi communities, killing men and enslaving women and children. The group justified actions through extremist doctrine labelling Yazidis as unbelievers, claiming religious permission for enslavement, forced conversion, and property seizure within a self declared caliphate.

Fact

In Islam, the Five Pillars form the basic framework of practice, and Islam presents these acts as essential duties for believers.

Standards of truth

Truth is not a mood, an instinct, or a personal preference. It is not something that becomes real because it feels right, comforting, or widely shared. Truth is what remains when belief, emotion, and identity are stripped away and claims are tested against reality. In an age often described as post-truth, this distinction has become blurred, not because truth has changed, but because standards have been lowered. Religion has thrived in this environment precisely because it trained people long ago to confuse conviction with accuracy.

Quote of the day

“The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way of women’s emancipation.” Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Ask the right question
