Weird and Religious

Some West African traditions include the idea that twins are spiritually powerful. In certain cultures, if a twin dies, a small carved figure is made to represent the lost child. The figure is washed, fed, and carried by the mother as though it were alive.

In the name of religion

2003, Iraq after invasion. Insurgent groups including Islamist militants targeted Shia pilgrims and religious gatherings with bombings. Perpetrators justified attacks as jihad against rival Muslim sects and foreign backed authorities, deepening sectarian religious war.

Fact

In Confucianism, social roles come with duties, and Confucianism emphasises responsibility more than personal rights.

Faith or reality?

Religion romanticises faith as courage in the face of uncertainty, but that description is false. Courage faces uncertainty without inventing answers. Faith avoids uncertainty by declaring it solved. It replaces the discomfort of not knowing with the comfort of imagined certainty. That comfort is seductive, yet it destroys intellectual honesty. The unknown is not confronted. It is buried beneath conviction. This does not mean that humans must live without meaning or conviction. It means that meaning and conviction should rest on reality, not retreat from it. Questioning does not corrode understanding. It creates it. Doubt is not decay but a sign that a belief deserves attention. Reason does not destroy truth. It destroys error.

Quote of the day

“The easy confidence with which I know another man’s religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also.” Mark Twain.
