In the name of religion

1529, Central Europe. Ottoman Muslim forces besieged Vienna. Expansion was framed by leaders as legitimate jihad and extension of Islamic rule, while Christian defenders cast resistance as protecting Christendom from Islamic domination, giving the conflict strong religious meaning on both sides.

Fact

In Hinduism, bhakti is a major path centred on devotion to a chosen deity, involving prayer, singing, ritual acts, and a personal emotional connection with the divine.

Clarity Overdue

The question is not whether a god exists in some abstract or redefined sense but instead why humans ever believed that one existed in the first place. Rather than endlessly arguing over interpretations of scripture, it makes more sense asking why scripture was written, by whom, and under what conditions. Rather than negotiating with belief, it is better to explain it. The goal is not to offend believers, but offence may not be avoidable either because people chose to be offended and at what level. Comfort has had centuries to soothe frightened minds and now clarity is overdue.

Quote of the day

“Religions are all alike, founded upon fables and mythologies.” Thomas Jefferson.
